Erika was born and raised in Puerto Rico. She received her BS in Chemical Engineering from the University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez. She  completed an REU in the Center for High-rate Nanomanufacturing (CHN) at Umass-Lowell in the summer of 2011, and spent a year as a Co-Op at Eli Lilly (Cymbatlta, Cialis) in Guayama, PR in the Engineering and Maintenance Department where she received an award for Continuous Improvement.
